I’m so pleased to return to my blog with great news! We are extremely proud and fortunate to have Dr. Simon Starkey join our staff. Dr. Starkey is Board Certified in Avian Practice and treats exotic pets and small mammals as well. He comes to The Animal Medical Hospital and Bird Clinic and Whitestone Vet Care with the goal of establishing a dedicated Avian and Exotic service in the Queens and Long Island region. He is the only Board Certified Avian Veterinarian in Queens, Brooklyn, The Bronx. (For more information and Biographical information about Dr. Starkey, please visit our website www.drwylerpetdoc.com ). With Dr. Starkey’s addition, please be sure to watch for more expanded hours of service as well.
We’re also making some improvements to our Well Pet Programs. We are now in the process of changing our Canine Vaccine Protocol to include the first 3 year licensed Canine Distemper-Adenovirus-Parvo Virus Vaccine (DAP). Our reason for going to a 3 year vaccine protocol is to stay true to our philosophy that often times “Less is Better”. Since we will be using a proven and licensed 3 year DAP vaccine, we feel confident that your pets’ protection will still be strong and lasting. This will essentially reduce the number of vaccines we will need to administer to our canine patients on a yearly basis. Fewer vaccines mean fewer side effects and reactions. Other vaccines such as Leptospirosis and Lyme Disease, along with the new Canine Influenza H3N8 vaccine, will still be boostered on a yearly basis. Bordetella also will be boosted at least yearly (or every 6 months for pets going to grooming shops, kennels, doggie day care, and dog runs or parks). However, with the new CAP 3 Year vaccine joining the 3 Year Rabies Vaccine Protocol, we’re working towards giving fewer vaccines yearly. Remember, the most important part of your pets’ Health Care Maintenance program is the Bi-annual Physical Examination and Blood screen. Early detection and recognition of disease is the best way to keep your pets healthy. Early diagnosis of such diseases as Cancer, Kidney and Liver Disease, Diabetes and other chronic conditions can help them lead longer and happier lives. Our goal is always to help you and your pets live longer and enjoy the benefits of good health. I welcome your comments and thoughts.
